Beaming through a tucked away corner of Brighton’s busy lanes, Permit Room is open and ready to welcome one and all. Not to be confused with the buzzy bars in our Dum cafés, this Permit Room is an outpost all of its own. Read on.
DUM BELIEVES in the quiet power of a shared meal.
We’re inspired by the way food brings people together — across cultures, classes, and beliefs. Dum isn’t just a place to eat. It’s a place to sit together, speak freely, and be seen.
In a divided world, we want to serve as a soft landing.
While our journey is still unfolding, our vision is clear: to create spaces that feel welcoming to all — where no one is too different, too late, or too far removed to belong.
We’re laying the groundwork to support causes that align with this spirit — from local meal programs to future cultural events that bring communities together.
We don’t just want to serve food. We want to serve connection.
We’ve always believed that food can be more than a meal — it can be a way to care, to connect, and to give back.
As Dum grows, we plan to partner with charities in both the UK and India — supporting children who might otherwise go hungry. Our vision is simple: for every biryani served at Dum, we want to help put a nourishing meal on another table, somewhere it’s truly needed.
We’re working on the groundwork now, and our hope is to make this a permanent part of our story.
Not just a one-time drive. Not just a festive gesture. But something built into who we are.
Because the joy of feeding people should never be limited to paying guests.
At Dum, we believe in the quiet power of human connection.
In the future, we hope to introduce something simple — a shared moment that brings guests together, regardless of where they come from or what they believe in.
It might take the form of a tradition. Or a ritual. Or a gesture of solidarity we haven’t yet imagined.
But the goal will remain the same: to create space for understanding, and to honour the ties that hold people together.
When the time is right, we plan to pair this act with charitable giving — supporting organisations that help young people navigate conflict with compassion, not fear.
We’re not there yet. But we’re dreaming it into being.
Compassion. Generosity. Discipline. Honesty. Selflessness. Tolerance. These principles lie at the heart of Islam. Our Muslim brothers and sisters are bound to give, share and take care of others.
“Who wants to see some magic?” Chef Arun calls out. He flings the rolled out dough into the air, sending it soaring above the counter. It spins and twists, a graceful dancer in the air. The children watch its arc, their eyes wide with wonder, until it lands gently back in the chef’s hands. The children shriek in delight.
Since 2015, for every Dum meal you’ve enjoyed (whether in the cafés, via delivery, or as a meal kit), we’ve donated a meal to a child that might otherwise go hungry. A meal for a meal. This month, as we reached the milestone of donating 10 million meals, we had occasion to catch up with our dear friends and long-term charity partners, Magic Breakfast and Akshaya Patra. The work both charities do to end hunger as a barrier to education is simply incredible and we’re extremely proud to be able to support them and the communities they serve in the UK and India, respectively. We kindly invite you to take a moment to hear their reflections on our partnership and on the impact of the very important work they do.
Its not often you get the chance to make 1 + 1 = 3, but if you ever do – you should grab it with both hands. Because these are the moments you will remember, the ones you will cherish, the ones that makes it all worthwhile.
